Dr. Tiemann’s review: Every parent should read “Protecting the Gift.” Many people find the first few chapters unsettling, but when they stick with it, they inevitably feel empowered by the end. Gavin de Becker cuts through our denial to get to the heart of the realistic dangers our children face. He highlights the importance of honoring and listening to our intuition as parents. He also includes an analysis of the tricks that predators use to access to children by gaining parents’ misplaced trust. His first book, "The Gift of Fear,” covers the same core concepts, but focuses on adult self defense—it is an excellent book for parents and teens to read together.

Dr. Tiemann’s review: Sherryll Kraizer’s book gives parents practical advice about setting up safety rules and practicing them with their children. She uses a “What If?” game to role-play safety scenarios with kids without scaring them. “The Safe Child Book” is more practical than “Protecting the Gift,” and doesn’t spend as much time on the theory of coercion, though it does contain solid background information on sexual abuse.

FROM AMAZON
Dr. Tiemann’s review: This deceptively simple book gets to the heart of two of the hardest things to do as a parent: being truly present with our children, and allowing them to experience all of their feelings. As time passes, I appreciate the wisdom of Cheri Huber’s message even more.

Dr. Tiemann's review: A fascinating book written by an expert in social psychology. Cialdini exposes the manipulative techniques used by everyone from used-car salesmen to cults. This is not a safety book per se, but educates readers on how to recognize and resist coercion. It is a great read that provides a valuable education on how to strengthen our boundary-setting skills.
